Belfast Hub Submitted for Planning

The Belfast Transport Hub, designed by John McAslan + Partners with Arup for Translink, has been submitted for planning. The multi-million pound Transport Hub is one of the flagship projects in the NI Executive’s Programme for Government.

“This impressive facility will play a key role in positioning Belfast as a modern, confident and progressive city which will attract further multi-national investors and boost the economic opportunities for the city and for Northern Ireland. The Hub design team of John McAslan and Partners and Arup has an extensive portfolio in the development and delivery of modern and efficient transport infrastructure facilities, including King’s Cross Station in London.”

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive

The Belfast Transport Hub, designed by John McAslan + Partners with Arup, is a strategically significant project for Northern Ireland. As the main gateway for Belfast with rail and bus connections to all parts of Northern Ireland, it will also be the main rail and coach link to Dublin, with direct connections to major airports. With existing facilities at capacity, the scheme involves the development of an integrated bus and rail transport facility that will form a key gateway into Belfast City Centre, representing a critical element in the ongoing regeneration of the city.

Located on the 8 hectare site of the existing Europa Bus Centre and Great Victoria Street Train Station, the project will deliver a new city quarter, enabling the development of a 10 hectare brownfield site to the west of Belfast’s central commercial district.

The new transport hub will include 26 bus stands and 8 rail platforms, providing step-free access to multi-modal interchanges beyond the hub for taxi and cycle, as well the proposed Belfast Rapid Transit network. The project includes a masterplan of the site, with the proposed development providing approximately 135,000 sqm of mixed use accommodation. 13 million passengers will use the Hub by 2030. A decision is expected later this year.
