The practice is delighted to announce that the Msheireb Museums project in Doha, Qatar, for Msheireb Properties, last night won International Project of the Year at the 2018 Building Awards.
The four historic houses – Company House, Bin Jelmood House Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House – have been remodelled and extended to accommodate state-of-the-art museum environments, supported by visitor facilities, restaurant and retail amenities.
The creation of museums within existing buildings requires a forensic understanding of original building fabrics and the way these buildings relate to their environment. While respecting the heritage value of these structures, we have sensitively transformed them to accommodate the latest museum display technologies.
The Museums bring history to life – interactive exhibition displays vividly communicate the experience, artefacts and meanings of the past to a 21st-century audience. Imaginatively preserving Doha’s rich heritage, the Msheireb Museums communicate a distinct chapter of Qatari history and culture, revealing how Qataris lived and worked, their interests and aspirations.
