Three Projects are Regional Finalists in The Civic Trust Awards

The Bolshevik Factory in Moscow, The Msheireb Development in Doha and The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Kericho in Kenya have all been short-listed as regional finalists in this year's Civic Trust Awards.

The Bolshevik Factory on Leningradsky Prospekt comprises a wide range of buildings of varying ages and significance, including historic elements dating from the late 19th century which were the first buildings in Moscow to boast electric light. The 50,000 sqm redevelopment features internal covered ‘streets’ and office space with exceptional views over Moscow.

The Msheireb Development... John McAslan and Partners has transformed a group of historic Heritage Houses within Msheireb Properties’ flagship redevelopment of the historical downtown area of Doha. The four historic houses – Company House, Bayt Jelmood, Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House - have been remodelled and extended to accommodate state-of-the-art museum environments showcasing key elements of Qatari history and culture. The new Jumaa Mosque is based on traditional Qatari mosques, which have for centuries used orientation, shading, natural ventilation and water to create environments for prayer. The design reflects the key principles of Islamic art and architecture - simplicity, functionality, spirituality, light, pattern, geometry and water. The plan form, based on a double square, follows classical Islamic precedent, as does the use of geometric patterns and designs, creating an elegant space with perfect proportions, with pierced roof screens creating patterns of dappled light and shade. The Cultural Forum fuses Qatari urban and domestic traditions with innovative design to create a welcoming and open place, functionally, creatively and urbanistically – a dynamic civic hub bringing together Qatari and international artists, performers and the public. The building’s atmosphere evokes the traditional Qatari courtyard house. A central atrium is surrounded by a dramatic series of processional stairs and surmounted by a skylight and a patterned screen inspired by Qatari motifs, diffusing light and producing artfully shadowed internal volumes.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Kericho is located some 250 km west of Nairobi. It lies within the Highlands, close to the Rift Valley, enjoying magnificent views across tea plantations and surrounding hills. Our design for the Cathedral creates a unique and sacred place for an assembled congregation of over 1500 seated celebrants to participate in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Mass under one giant unifying roof.

Shortlisted schemes will now be put forward to the National Panel who will assess them as potential candidates for National/International Awards or Commendation.
