Education Introduction

JMP has designed education projects from primary to university level in Britain, the Middle East, and South America. These schemes have challenged the practice with a wide range of briefs and education methods, and our design responses have often produced award-winning projects, notably in the Academy programme, at leading universities, and at elite schools.

Wider cultural and social developments strongly influence our approach to education projects. In many countries, for example, there is a strong trend towards the merging of learning and social environments, particularly at tertiary level. And this has  led us to pursue innovations in both internal and external design, and environmental efficiency.

In the Middle East, cultural influences have led us to produce regionally innovative school buildings whose architecture draws on both western and Islamic formal and spatial precedents; and in Brazil, our design for an international school pays homage to one of the greats of modernist architecture, Oscar Niemeyer.

Competition to attract the best students is increasing, particularly in the tertiary sector. Outstanding designs for buildings and spaces are playing key roles in increasing the perceived educational and social offer, and this is exciting for us as architects because it allows us to stretch designs in new ways. And in doing so, we are have built strong and ambitious relationships with universities, who continue to commission buildings from us.

In addition to designing individual education buildings, JMP's Education and Culture design team have delivered campus consolidation schemes, highly detailed internal space-use audits, and worked with the practice's award-winning Masterplanning and Landscape units to produce external space-use schemes in both urban and "island"  settings.
