British Embassy Algiers Interiors
The new Embassy, on a sensitive site in Algiers, is the first contemporary Modernist architecture in the Algerian capital. Although its key architectural features express historic Algerian precedents, the Embassy introduces new technical and construction standards to the country.

The Embassy sits below the Moorish-style Ambassador’s residence and has been skilfully integrated in a garden re-designed by JMP’s landscape team to retain views to the bay, and to incorporate a wide variety of tree and plant species. A major challenge was balancing the security requirements with flexibility and welcoming accessibility.

The brief required a new British Embassy Building that would allow for future functional flexibility – and which would clearly signal Britain’s long term political, cultural, and commercial links to Algeria. The Embassy’s environmental performance is unique locally, and has gained a BREEAM ‘Good’ rating, making it one of Algeria’s most environmentally sophisticated buildings.

The structure and materials are innovative in terms of Algerian construction practice. The reinforced concrete structure has sandstone facades, and a screen of timber sections, steam-twisted in Wales, covers the curving façade that faces the garden. Fair-faced concrete was also used, a first in Algeria, which required careful prototyping and on-site supervision by JMP project architects.
