John McAslan + Partners has designed a new two-storey library building for the community of Camberwell, with dedicated age-specific stock areas, enhanced IT utilities, study space and flexible meeting rooms. The scheme responds to Southwark Council's desire for a unique and accessible civic space by creating a site master plan that can be sub-divided into three separate character areas: the Library Entrance Space, the 'pedestrian spine' and the Magistrates Court Forecourt. This rich public space will be light and open; the mezzanine level serves as a study area, benefiting from views out over Camberwell Green and the new public space. Occupying a triangular site, the building will be a new focal point for the community. The scheme's sustainable credentials include solar control of windows, natural ventilation and the provision of 40 cycle spaces, resulting in a 'Very Good' BREEAM rating.
