King's Cross Station Masterplan

Widely praised for its design and refurbishment of the Grade I listed Station, the practice also undertook much of the urban realm and landscape work including the St. Pancras Plaza entrance to the north, surrounding streetscape and the Western Concourse and the Station platforms. Our team also acted as advisors for the design of the recently completed square to the south of the Station entrance. The carefully choreographed ensemble of landscape, street furniture, wayfinding and architecture is one of the great successes of the station refurbishment.

The practice is leading the design of the redeveloped King's Cross station, and central to the understanding of the project was this exploration of more flexible and mobile tools to develop urban form at this scale.  This urban framework is a response to the need for a strategic and conceptual plan to direct development and growth over time.

Ironically it has always been the more ruthless imposition of road and railway infrastructure that have figured the English city, with little regard for history, urban form or community interests.  When the station was originally constructed, 20,000 homes in Somers Town were demolished, leading to fundamental urban severance, which the new masterplan aims to finally resolve.
