Museum of Russian Impressionism, Moscow

The Museum of Russian Impressionism forms part of the practice's reinvention of the Bolshevik Factory, one of Moscow’s most significant examples of pre and post-Soviet industrial heritage. The existing buildings date from 1884 and reflect the French influence of Adolf Sioux, the factory’s original founder, who established these grandiose premises to manufacture high quality perfume and confectionery. In 1884 the Bolshevik Factory was the first building in Moscow to boast electric lighting. The brief called for the redevelopment of the Bolshevik Factory as an ambitious adaptive re-use project, involving the sensitive repair of an important piece of Moscow’s historic fabric.

The overall scheme comprises a 50,000 sqm commercial redevelopment, a dramatic covered ‘street’, a high-end residential element, publicly accessible landscaped courtyard gardens, and the new Museum, which provides over 1,000 sqm of exhibition space, with the permanent collection of Russian Impressionist art arranged on the ground floor and temporary exhibits on the upper floors. Including a cinema, a multimedia zone, educational facilities for children, a café and retail facilities, the Museum is now a cultural magnet for the city, hosting a year-round programme of international exhibitions.
