Established in on the tenth anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the Kigali Genocide Memorial stands on a site where many thousands of victims are buried. The memorial serves as a permanent place of mourning and reflection, while also supporting Rwanda’s commitment to remembrance, education and reconciliation.
JMP developed a phased masterplan to expand and enhance the memorial, responding to its growing role. The proposals introduce new entrance and education facilities alongside extensive landscaping, shaping a sequence of calm, contemplative spaces that support mourning and reflection.
The first phase of works proposed in the masterplan was completed in spring 2014, marking the twentieth anniversary of the genocide and reinforcing the memorial’s role as a place of dignity and learning.
