The masterplan for the University of Manchester and the wider Oxford Road Corridor (ORC) reimagines a 214-hectare stretch of the city as a unified and inclusive urban district. The project brings together a series of previously fragmented regeneration initiatives, integrating them into a coherent strategy grounded in spatial, social and economic analysis.
Central to the brief was the university’s ambition to reduce the perceived divide between ‘town and gown’, and to foster a more open, democratic image of higher education. The masterplan strengthens physical, visual and social connections between the campus and the city, extending the public realm through a network of new open spaces, streets and squares. Pedestrian and cycle routes improve permeability and encourage movement through the campus by all residents.
A framework for growth
The masterplan also establishes a long-term framework for economic development and regeneration. Proposals include the creation of a new science park, the revitalisation of the area’s high street, Oxford Road, and the introduction of a creative media zone, housing and community-led business development along the eastern edge of the corridor. These initiatives are designed to activate key thresholds and support Manchester’s ambition to become the knowledge capital of the North.
