Stanislavsky Factory Masterplan and Public Realm
Moscow, Russia. 2009
The multiple award winning masterplan and subsequent transformation of the historically important Stanislavsky Factory complex has set a new benchmark for public realm design in Moscow. Originally developed in the early 20th century by one of Russia’s leading industrialists and cultural patrons – the Stanislavsky family – the masterplan has sensitively linked some 14 historic buildings with commercial, residential and cultural uses. The public realm design constitutes a bold new approach in urban Moscow, creating a series of linked public and semi-private open spaces of considerable variety, including urban plazas, lawns, gardens, outdoor performance spaces and carefully integrated parking. The project has received widespread acclaim and has helped fuel debate about the importance of landscape in urban environments and the role of public spaces in Moscow.
