John McAslan + Partners are delighted to have been appointed architect of the recently announced Waterloo Metro Station in Sydney in collaboration with Woods Bagot. Our user-focused station design will position people at the centre of the transport experience, creating a welcoming hub in a series of highly legible below-ground spaces naturally lit by a network of skylights and intuitive to navigate for all.

The practice’s second station project for the city will be located at the heart of the Waterloo urban renewal scheme, with the new station acting as a catalyst for further regeneration and unlocking opportunities for local people. Due to complete in 2024, the station’s design references local vernacular traditions in its materiality and form, as well as the area’s rich cultural histories and the site’s geology.

John McAslan + Partners’ Sydney Lead Troy Uleman identifies the project as a contributor to Sydney’s evolving identity as a global city, as well as a highly local response to community, place and diversity: ‘The district of Waterloo is a dynamic, multicultural context, rich and varied in history and demographics. The station will form a new gateway to the area and it’s critical that it has a strong Waterloo identity.’

JMP is also currently working to deliver a 24ha transformation of Sydney’s Central Station with Woods Bagot and Laing O’Rourke, due to complete in 2024.
