John McAslan + Partners has been working on costed design proposal to help Britain’s theatre sector reopen in the next 6-months. With the pandemic already costing the UK theatre industry £500 million, ongoing requirements for social distancing have made it seem impossible for many of Britain’s theatres to viably reopen.

John McAslan + Partners has sought to see how the innovative design can help secure the future of theatres through creating a design blueprint that allow theatres to reopen at 60% capacity, focusing initially on London’s West End. The proposal is based on a combination of rethinking seating design and layouts, integrating a range of spatial strategies for social distancing and a new innovative type of theatre seat.
