Camberwell Green

Tasked with transforming an underutilised and neglected public space in South London’s Camberwell, John McAslan + Partners' led the design for a highly activated, community focused 1.4-hectare Camberwell Green Park. In conjunction with JMP’s development of the adjacent Library, our team developed a strategy to transform the two sites, linking them to a wider network of green spaces at the heart of Camberwell and Southwark. The landscape team’s interventions enhanced connectivity and pedestrian routes, creating a highly-programmed and active space, including a new play area and spaces for community events. Since it’s opening in 2016 Camberwell Green has become a vibrant and beloved focal point for the community.

'Camberwell Green, with a few subtle but all important changes, feels open, welcoming and new. The removal of the railings on the Peabody side is great. The paving is lovely. The playground is always teeming. As soon as it was re-opened, people flocked. Please pass this on to the people who redesigned and reinvented this space.They did a brilliant job.'
