This renowned Grade II* listed 1846 steam engine turntable structure, designed by Robert Dockray and Robert Stephenson, fell into disrepair in the late 20th century after being used as a gin warehouse and, more famously, in the 1960s and 70s as a venue for progressive music, avant garde performers, and radical theatre from directors such as Peter Brook. Leading a diverse design team, John McAslan + Partners’ multiple award-winning scheme repaired the historic fabric, transformed the central space into a modern, flexible auditorium, created practice studios for local youngsters, and added a wraparound extension. The Roundhouse has since become one of London’s most dynamic international performance venues, welcoming millions of patrons since its transformation in 2006.
