Stations with soul: rethinking transport hubs as urban anchors
by Colin Bennie.
Colin Bennie, director at John McAslan + Partners, argues that today’s stations should be more than places of transit – they must inspire, connect, and offer permeability that embeds them meaningfully in the life of the city.
Transport architecture has evolved from mere infrastructure into a powerful blend of engineering and design that shapes urban life. Once dismissed, stations like the Elizabeth Line's Stirling Prize-winning design now elevate everyday journeys. Historic termini such as King’s Cross and St Pancras offered civic grandeur and identity – qualities often lost in post-war hubs. Modern stations are reclaiming this, becoming urban catalysts that activate public spaces, reflect local character, and foster regeneration. Prioritising clarity, accessibility, and experience over generic design, future hubs must connect communities, support active travel, and inspire movement, proving transport can be both functional and transformative in shaping cities.
