Lancaster University, Charles Carter Building
Lancaster, UK. 2011
The award-winning 4,000m² Charles Carter Building, with its bold black brick colonnaded elevations, is part of the practice’s ongoing portfolio of low-cost, environmentally sophisticated, high quality schemes for Lancaster University. The four-storey BREEAM 'Excellent' building’s central atrium contains flexible learning environments for the University’s 6* Management School and has proved a popular ‘heart space’ for students from other departments across the campus. The ground floor facilities include a lecture theatre, seminar rooms and a social learning space. The three upper floors house separate departments, with a range of cellular and open-plan offices for staff and postgraduates.

‘John McAslan + Partners’ design for the Charles Carter Building demonstrates the practice’s ability to produce a high-calibre educational building at notably low cost. The project brings something distinct to the campus, creating flexible, light-filled learning conditions within a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Equally important is the way the building has been configured to increase cross-flow of students across the campus.’
