Fresh Kills Masterplan
New York City, USA. 2002
Following an open international competition that attracted many hundreds of entries, the practice and its partner Arup were selected as one of three finalists for the Fresh Kills Landfill to Landscape competition. The jury commended our scheme as 'compelling, well researched and comprehensive'. Covering 1,100ha on the west coast of Staten Island, the unique site contains the largest capped landfill in the world together with a significant area of intact tidal wildlife habitat. As the largest ongoing landscape project in the region, Fresh Kills is intended to be a key open amenity for the Island, the City and the region with the particular aim of extracting methane from the capped landfill to provide energy for 25,000 island homes.
