Max Mara Headquarters

Milan, Italy. 2004

In 1996 John McAslan + Partners won an international competition to design the 45,000m² headquarters complex for this leading Italian fashion house, Max Mara. The campus of low energy use buildings, set out in a modular grid, is carefully ordered across a 30ha rural site in Reggio Emilia, south of Milan. The scheme delivered studios and offices for Max Mara’s five companies plus showrooms and a 20,000m² distribution warehouse in a sensitively landscaped eco park designed in collaboration with the leading American landscape architect Peter Walker. The buildings feature a Modernist palette of exposed concrete, steel, brick and glass with the layout of the structures and park inspired by the mixture of open and closed vistas of the surrounding agricultural field patterns.

'John McAslan’s design has fully interpreted our brief with a great understanding of the importance of landscape. The project has been developed with coherence and a clear vision of the relationship between buildings, functions and people.'
