Kericho Cathedral
Kericho, Kenya. 2016
The practice’s award-winning design of Kericho Community Cathedral, set some 250km west of Nairobi in the Kenyan Highlands close to the Rift Valley, has provided worshippers with a striking landmark of faith. The Cathedral’s bold concrete-framed roof, engineered by Arup, cuts a very distinctive outline against the panorama of the tea plantations, hills and valleys around Kericho. The building’s simple palette of natural materials honours the faith and frugality of this rural community and celebrates the involvement of many local artisans in the Cathedral’s construction.

‘We were fortunate to have a client who believed that the integrity and honesty of construction and style in relation to the context was worth fighting for.’
